Free Embroidery Tools - Update

It's again this time of the year, that I write a blog post.
This time I’ve had to create an embroidery file. The initial design was made with Inkscape. Then I looked at different programs to create the embroidery file.

As I use mainly Linux I first looked at this programs:

Embroidermodder 2

Embroidermodder 2 is an open source program. It is far away from ready, but still active developed. The SVG import crashed even with the simples SVGs. What works is to use this tool as a viewer and converter for different file formats. Creating new files was not so successful.

Inkscape - Extension 1

There is an embroidery output extension for Inkscape. I tested it but was not very satisfied. Inkscape is not optimized for this job. You simply don’t have enough control.

Inkscape - Extension 2

And a second one as part of Embroidermodder. I haven't tested it.

Thred

Thred is a open source Windows program. It runs fine with wine. But the UI is really old school and the functionality is limited.(The homepage no longer exists.)

UniConvertor

UniConvertor supports some embroidery file formats, but I haven't tested it because automatic converting doesn't looked like the good idea.

As I was not very happy with this tools I switched to Windows and looked at this programs:

Stitch Era Universal

In a lot of places you can find that Stitch Era Universal is free, but it has just a 48 hour evaluation period before you have to pay. That's not what I call free. I haven’t tested it.

My Editor and TrueSizer Desktop

“my editor” and “TrueSizer Desktop” are free to use but closed source. They are more viewers than an editors. They are not build for creating new files and you have to register before you can download them.

SophieSew

SophieSew is a closed source freeware editor. It works fine for creating new files. In SophieSew you don’t have an undo and it crashes regularly, frequently saving is your friend. The author planned a new version, but there aren’t any news on the homepage for quite some time now. And contacting the author wasn’t successful too.

Over all I must say that I'm happy, that I don't have to use embroidery tools in the next time again. This time can be used by the developers to improve the tool, so that I'll have more fun next time.

    Hello, I just read your blog. I love what you were able to embroider and I agree there isn't much out there.

    From what I've read in the past month, Inkscape is working on adding an embroidery feature.

    One of the main Developers on Embroidnodder passed away from an accidental drowning.

    The gentleman from SophieSew is very sick.

    If you need links I will go back through my search history and try to find the sources, but I fount out about the drowning through github, if I remember right.

Low polygon 3D europe map

Hello my latest little project is a 3D low polygon map. I used Blender and Gimp to create this map: I've started with an elevation map of Europe I found on the website from "The European Environment Agency" (EEA). Thank you EU for this image: http://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/figures/elevation-map-of-europe Then I had to cut of the black border with Gimp and created a second image as height map: For this step I converted the image to black and white and then used the curve tool to make the mountains darker. This will make the mountains in the final image higher and easier to discover. Maps for Photo Books

  I love to add maps to the photo books. Here is a collection of some of them.    This is a example of a simple map without the visited places marked. I just added the big Texas label and the overview map of North-America. I used Inkscape and Gimp for this map.    This is a map I made as a title for a calender. I marked the locations from the photos. This image was made with Inkscape. This map is a mix of elements with Gimp extracted from old maps and then composed to a new map in Inkscape.  For this map I got the base image from Mapbox . Then I added the route and some details with Inkscape. To create the route I used Google My Maps , exported it as KML file and converted it to SVG. Here I used a image from the NASA and added the flight route with Gimp and the text boxes with Inkscape. Here I used Blender to create the map. Depth Map from Gallaxy S10 Photos

If you shoot with an Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus photos in the "Live Focus" mode Samsung saves four images. The first one is the one you see if you open the photo with any application. The second one is the image without any filter applied and the third one is the shot from the wight angle lens. You can get the images from all cameras with the command line tool "exiftool" and this command: exiftool -embeddedImage -a -b -W %d%f%c.%s test.jpg Image 1, with blurred background "effect" applied Image 2, without any filters added Image 3, a photo from the wight angle lens The fourth image is a depth map. The depth map is a raw 8-bit 1008 x 476 array and you can extract it with this command: exiftool -EmbeddedImage -b test.jpg > output.data To open the image you can use the Raw data loader from Gimp.
